snailTHIS MONTH'S TRIVIA QUESTIONS
It's spring marathon season, so how about three marathon trivia stumpers!?

1) Three big-city international marathons account for 9 of the top 10 Men's Marathon performances, all time. Can you name these three marathons?
2) Kenyans hold 7 of the Men's Top 10 Marathon performances, all time. Two of the other Top Ten times are held by Khalid Khannouchi (one as a Moroccan and one as an American). Who is the other Top Ten Male Marathoner not from Kenya?
3) You know that the Kenyan men dominate the marathon, do you know how many of the Women's Top 10 Marathon performances are held by a Kenyan?

snailTHE L.A. MARATHON'S RACE WITHIN A RACE
You are probably aware of the unique idea that the Los Angeles Marathon (LAM) organizers came up with last year in which they awarded a $50,000 cash prize to the first runner, male or female, to cross the Finish Line after giving the Elite Females a head start of 20 minutes and 30 seconds. I think this was a brilliant idea!

It's a great marketing ploy. This is the kind of thing that gets people talking about an event. Even people not into marathons will talk about whether the race was won by "the guy" or "the girl". They may not have a clue as to their names, but everyone it seems, is intrigued by a "battles of the sexes"!

And, let's face it -- for most people, watching a marathon on TV is a little like watching NASCAR with the sound off and zero likelihood of a spectacular crash.

Marathons need something like this to make them more interesting to the masses. If more marathons pitted the sexes against each other like this, it'd probably go a long way towards increasing interest in, and viewership of, marathons.

After all, when it comes to marathoning these days, most of us don't even know who the top runners are. And, there's no team to root for, so it's very hard for the average sports fan to get interested in marathons. Especially when there's no betting line!

So, it may be quirky and it may seem artificial to the purists, but the sport needs stuff like this. It's a shot in the arm. But, LAM does need to do a better job of deciding on the proper amount of head start.

This year, LAM organizers waited until just four days before the race to announce that they lowered the differential from last year's 20:30 to 15:50. Because of the depth of the women's field, they explained.

While it's true that the women's field had more fast women than the men's field had fast men, I don't think that's the way to go about setting the differential. It's just not fair to the competitors. The differential should be standardized to either a) the difference in the male and female course records, or b) the difference in the two world records (currently 10:30, by the way). I prefer the former.

When it's standardized, the athletes will know well in advance what the differential is and it'd be a much more equitable system. This year, women's winner Lyubov Denisova was a little miffed, and rightfully so, when the drastically reduced differential wasn't announced until four days before the event. With no appearance fees paid at LAM, she might have opted to run Boston or some other marathon where she could get some appearance money, if she had this information in advance.

Denisova subsequently missed out on this year's $75,000 bonus -- even though she broke the Women's Course Record! - when she finished 16:36 behind Men's Winner, Ben Maiyo who ran 2:09:35. A very fast time on the L.A. course, but it did not best the Men's Course Record of 2:09:25 set by Simon Bor) in 1999.

snailCONFUSED? WHEN AM I RUNNING AND WHEN AM I JOGGING?
Does it really matter?! Well, to many runners, it does. A lot of runners are very serious about what we do. We work hard trying to improve; struggle to get fitter and faster. And it takes a lot of effort and some sacrifice to get out there on a consistent basis. So we hate to have what we do referred to as...jogging.

It just sounds kind of demeaning, doesn't it? Random House dictionary says jogging is "to run at a leisurely, slow pace". Well, we may be slow, but we're definitely not leisurely. Ever! We're runners dang it, not joggers.

Okay, runners do at times jog and at other times race. And sometimes we're in between. So, is there a specific mile-pace that separates jogging from running, and running from racing; some magic mile-pace that defines runner versus jogger? No.

I've heard some elitist-type runners say something like, "Well, if you're running slower than a 10:00 pace, you're just jogging". Rather than tell them that they're just being arrogant, I simply explain to them that that speedy 7:00/mile "race" pace of theirs, is a jog for Alan Webb; or, if they're older, Steve Scott! In other words, it's all relative.

But one thing does seem clear: it's a universal annoyance to serious runners when you call them joggers, or describe what they do as jogging. Despite the fact that at times we jog, what we do is RUN; and what we are is RUNNERS. I always chuckle when I remember listening to a talk by Bill Squires, the famous coach of the Boston Athletic Club.

Squires had been out for a morning run with his team in which they did a 10-mile workout at 6:00 pace. A short time later when he was out at breakfast, someone at the restaurant said to him, "I saw you out jogging with your boys this morning". It was like fingernails scraping down the chalkboard. The hair stood up on the back of his neck. He was appalled.

So please,...don't call it jogging.
