snailTHIS MONTH'S TRIVIA QUESTION
When you go to a track meet, don't you just love the relays? I think it's incredibly thrilling to watch these gazelle-like runners blaze around the track and try to make those smooth handoffs without slowing down at all. Here are your questions for this month:
1) In what country were Track & Field relays invented?
2) What year was that?
3) What are the two most commonly run relays?

snailWHAT'S YOUR PACE?
Last month's poll results, as usual, had some surprises. Over 90% of the respondents do some form of cross-training! That surprised me. Okay, I know it's not a scientific poll, but still... Another surprise: more than half of the cross-training was done indoors.
Not too surprising that the most popular cross-training activities were Gym Equipment, Weight Lifting and Cycling. Here are the complete results:

snailFORM TIP FOR THIS MONTH
This is a continuing feature on tips for your running form. We discussed stride length last month. This month you'll see how your breathing can help you control your pace.

TIP #5: Breathing to Control/Monitor Your Pace.
Pacing is critical to racing your best at any distance. If you've raced much at all, you have undoubtedly learned that too fast of an early pace can literally destroy your race performance. (I still remember hearing the complaint from Tom Tellez--Carl Lewis' coach in the '80s and '90s--that one of the hardest things to teach his sprinters was how to pace themselves in the 100-meter race).

The best way I've found for controlling pace in a long race is by carefully observing and controlling your breathing. Let's take a look at how control of your breathing can lead to pace control.

The first thing to realize is that normal breathing when we're running or walking is very rhythmical. Your breathing coincides with your feet striking the ground. You begin each inhale as a foot strikes the ground, and you also begin the exhale as your foot strikes.

Almost always, this is an even cadence, like three steps per inhale and three steps per exhale (3/3). If you are running with a 3/3 cadence and you decide to start running faster, you will soon find yourself breathing at a 2/2 cadence.

If you don't already have a sense of the relationship between your breathing and your pace, you'll want to play with this on some training runs before experimenting in a race. Try all different cadences, 1/1 to 4/4, even 5/5 and up. Be observant. Notice how your pace relates to your breathing cadence. For each cadence, there will be a limit as to how fast you can run and maintain that breathing rhythm.

This latter observation is very valuable in racing where the most common mistake is to begin the race at a pace that is just too fast. You will see that you can keep yourself from going too fast by simply keeping your breathing cadence from becoming too fast.

Example: Say, that after some experimentation in your training runs, you have discovered that the fastest pace you can expect to maintain using a 3/3 cadence is around 8:00 (eight minutes per mile). Now, let's say you think you're fit enough to race today's 10k at a 7:30 average pace. A logical strategy then would be to start at around 7:45 or so, work your way down to 7:30s in the middle, and finish around 7:20 or 7:15 pace.

You can accomplish this by monitoring your breathing and starting out at 3/3 for the first 1/2 or 3/4 of a mile before allowing yourself to slide into 2/2 as you approach the mile mark. If you are still too fast at Mile 1, slow yourself back down to 3/3 for a while. Even if you go through Mile 1 at, say 8:00, you still have plenty of time to make up that 30 seconds.

However, if you didn't watch your breathing and you were at 2/2 almost immediately, you may go through mile one at 7:00 or faster, and you're race is probably doomed before halfway.

So, in this example, you may even want to force yourself to run 3/3 all the way to the first mile mark and see where you are after one mile. You may find that even with 3/3 you're a little too fast, which means you can stay at the more comfortable 3/3 even longer.

Keep in mind that we're all different. There are lots of variables. The main thing to emphasize is that it's important to experiment and try things. Play with this. I think you will find it very valuable, especially if you're one who normally cannot run even- or negative-splits (second half faster than first half) in a race.

snailHAVE YOU TRIED YOGA?
All runners know that regular stretching is a good idea, right? Then why is it so hard to incorporate stretching into our regular fitness routine? I think there's a one-word answer: impatience.

The whole world, at least here in SoCal, seems to be in such a huge hurry all the time. We could probably all benefit from a little more calmness for some small period of time each day. But, it's so hard to slow down, isn't it? And stretching can seem like such a poor use of our precious time. I'd hazard a guess that even the few people who do stretch, rush through their stretching to hurry onto something else. So, what's a runner to do?

Commit to a yoga class, three or four times a week. Give it a 3-month trial and see if it's right for you. I recently started Hot Yoga-the yoga postures are done in a hot room of about 110 degrees-and immediately was able to identify areas that needed strengthening and other areas that needed improved flexibility. In three months I've seen lots of improvement in those areas, but I need lots more, so now I'm sold. I guess you could say I've become a believer. It may not be for everybody (what is?), but we're all getting older and you know that if you don't do something, you're flexibility is only going to get worse as you age.

The beauty of a yoga class is that you're forced to take the time to do a complete strength and flexibility regimen. In other words, you cannot be impatient. It makes a great cross-training activity, too, so give it some consideration.
